Rug Introductions: The Joshagan



Facts About this Rug:
  • Geometric with stylized figures. 
  • It originates in Southern Iran where it is woven locally by a nomadic tribe. A nomadic rug means that it's made outdoors in tents by nomadic tribes
  • The wool is grown and spun locally. The dyes are also prepared locally and are all vegetable dyes. 
  • The rug is woven on a cotton foundation, using the Ghiordes knot.  
  • The rugs have a medallion in the middle and are symnetical along the x- and y-axes
  • Small ornate figures and stylized flowers feature prominently into the rug

Size: 

Joshagans are small and can fill in a tight space such as a foyer or entryway. They typically run 2 X 3 feet.

Rug Introductions: The Kashan



Facts About this Rug:
  • The Kashan is a classical high-quality floral rug. Kashans do not use animal patterns
  • Like the Tabriz, the Kashan is generally a Persian workshop rug. It's made indoors in a rudimentary family-run factory
  • Hand-woven in the village of Kashan in Central Iran
  • Contains High quality Merino wool on cotton foundation
  • Colors come from vegetable dyes. The classical Kashan dyes are cochineal red and indigo blue. 
  • Weaver uses a high density Sennah knot to produce this fine Kashan rug

Size: 

Kashans are typically 5 X 7 feet and in the larger sizes go to 10 X 14 feet

Price: 

Kashans generally run $3000 and up for 5 X 7 and 10 X 14 will run $15,000-$20,000 for the larger sizes.

Rug Introductions: The Ivory Tabriz

























Facts About This Rug:
  • This rug is called a Tabriz, so named after the Northwest Iranian city where these rugs are made.
  • What's unique about a Tabriz are the colors. You often find orange and a green among the hues
  • We know that the Tabriz dates back over 500 years.
  • The Tabriz is considered a "workshop rug" rather than a tribal rug. It is made in a family-run factory that is mostly made indoors.
  • Every part of the Tabriz is hand-made. The wool is locally sourced and the material is mostly wool with silk highlights.
  • The addition of silk highlights is the most valuable factor in the rug's pricing

Rugs start small at 5 X 7 and vary to room size
 
Price:

The rugs runs from $2,000 depending on rug density and amount of silk in the rug

Rug Introductions: The Bijar


Facts About this Rug:
  • The Bijar originates in Northern Iran and is woven by men and women from the Kurdish tribes.
  • Known as the "iron rug," is is the most durable rug in the trade
  • Geometric in design, it uses the typical Herati pattern.  
  • The rug has an excellent quality wool pile on cotton foundation. 
  • Bijar is a Kurdish-occupied village
Size: 

Bijars most commonly run in the following sizes: 2 X 4, 5 X 7 and 6 X 9

Price: 

The 2 X 4 typically goes for $1500, the 5 X 7 runs for $3000 and up, and the 6 X 9 typically ranges from $4,000 to $5,000
